Statue Scales Explained: 1/4, 1/6, 1/10 and More

Three original horror creature statues of different scales side by side on a dark surface

A statue's scale tells you its size relative to the real subject. A 1/4 scale figure is one quarter of life size, 1/6 is one sixth, and so on, so a smaller bottom number means a bigger statue. Scale decides shelf space, presence, and price. Here is how to read it and how to choose.

How scale works

Scale is a ratio between the statue and the real or imagined subject. The larger the figure, the more material, detail, and paint it needs, which is why a 1/4 piece costs far more than a 1/10 of the same character. A creature with no real-world size is scaled to an assumed height.

Common scales and rough sizes

  • 1/10: compact, roughly 18 to 22 cm for a human figure. Easy to display in numbers.
  • 1/6: a popular middle ground, around 30 cm, strong presence without dominating a shelf.
  • 1/4: large and imposing, often 45 to 60 cm, a true centrepiece.
  • 1/3 and up: statement pieces that need dedicated space.

Creatures and monsters vary, since their assumed height changes the final size.

Busts versus full figures

A bust shows head and shoulders, so a 1/1 bust can be life-size while staying compact. A full figure at the same scale is far larger. Always check the stated height, not just the ratio.

Which scale should you choose?

Match the scale to your space and budget. Larger scales reward you with detail and impact but demand a sturdy, stable shelf and careful handling and care. Smaller scales let you build a wider collection. The bigger the piece, the more it benefits from a proper display setup.

Frequently asked questions

What does 1/6 scale mean?

One sixth of the subject's real size. For a human figure that is roughly 30 cm tall.

Is a bigger scale always better?

Not necessarily. Larger scales show more detail and presence but cost more and need more space. Choose for your shelf and budget.

How do I know how tall a statue will be?

Check the listed height in centimetres or inches. Scale ratios vary by subject, so the stated size is the reliable number.
